Anne Kelleher - Silver's Edge

"No," Kian said, looking into the fire. "You're right, maiden. I don't."

Uwen scratched his head, then his ear. "You better watch that sort of talk around the old lion, Chief.

Lion don't care for those who don't care for his cub."

Kian's reply was only a dark look.

Nessa hugged her knees close beneath her chin and gathered the edges of her plaid closer. The autumn night was chilly and the twilight had long since deepened into night. The silver-edged ax was on the ground beside her, ready to be grabbed at a moment's notice. "Are you sure we're safe here?"

"As sure as I can be about anything in this topsy-turvy world we've come to, maiden." Kian looked up and around. The firelight carved dark canyons of shadow across his face as he turned his head. "The wicce-women at Killcarrick had some advice for us—'tis why we stopped here for the night, beneath this stand of oaks. They told us this was once a sacred grove, that we'd be safer here from the goblins than in any other place. As for human enemies… Uwen and I will take turns at the watch." He shrugged. "These are unsettled times."

"Ah, I nearly forgot, Chief." Uwen stood up and loped over to the wagon—the one cart in all of Killcairn that wasn't stained by blood or gore—unhitched the backboard and rummaged in and through the various bundles. He turned with a leather pack, from which emanated a strong, although not altogether unpleasant, aroma. "I got this from Granny Molly—you remember, the wicce-woman from Killcrag. Did you know goblins're repelled by the smell of garlic?"

"Get along with you, Uwen." Kian waved his arm, and the multicolored swirls on his forearm flashed in the fire. "No one believes that. The only things that repel them are sunlight and silver."

"Suit yourself, Chief." He winked at Nessa. "I'm wearing my necklace tonight. If you had any sense, you'd wear yourn."

"If I'd had any sense, I'd've sent Maddig and Tuavhal back to Killcarrick."

"Ah, but I'm the only one who took the time to talk to the lad and the wicce-women. You'd've been lost on this trip without me." He settled back down beside the fire and picked up a long, sharpened stick and stuck a hunk of bread on it. "I won't mind telling you, Chief, I'm disappointed. There's nothing like a coney caught in the wild cooked over a flame with fresh green herbs—even this time of year. Week-old bread and month-old cheese just doesn't sit the same way, you know?"

Kian only poked at the fire with another stick.

"We should've set a trap for one," said Nessa, for the thought of stew made her mouth water. They Anne Kelleher - Silver's Edge

certainly had plenty of garlic with which to flavor it. "I saw wild carrots just over there."

"Haven't you noticed, lass?" Uwen inspected his toast. "There're no coneys to be trapped. None to be found the whole length between Killcairn and Killcarrick and it may go even farther for all I know.
